U hoeft zich dus nooit te schamen: deze vorm van incontinentie kan iedereen overkomen. Bij fecale incontinentie kunnen zich verschillende symptomen voordoen. Bovendien kan de aandoening gepaard gaan met andere, gerelateerde klachten. Het doet er in zo\u2019n geval niet toe of u voorafgaand aan het verlies van uw ontlasting enige aandrang heeft gevoeld; in beide gevallen is er sprake van fecale incontinentie. De aandoening kan ook gepaard gaan met klachten zoals diarree, obstipatie, winderigheid en buikkrampen. Soms komt ook het verlies van urine gelijktijdig voor. Het kan zijn dat er sprake is van letsel aan intern weefsel, door bijvoorbeeld een operatie. Het letsel kan ervoor zorgen dat de sluitspier of de zenuwen die de bekkenbodem aansturen slecht- of niet werken. Ook bepaalde ziektes zoals bijvoorbeeld Parkinson, Crohn en het Prikkelbaar Darmsyndroom kunnen fecale incontinentie veroorzaken. Soms kan medicatiegebruik leiden tot een verslapping van de kringspier, of het verzakken van de endeldarm. Enkele andere bekende veroorzakers van de aandoening zijn obstipatie, aanhoudende diarree en overloopdiarree. Het is dan ook belangrijk dat u contact opneemt met uw huisarts wanneer deze aandoening zich voordoet. Uw huisarts zal in eerste instantie nagaan of uw klachten kunnen worden verholpen met medicatie of dieetmaatregelen (vezelrijke voeding). Wanneer dit niet werkt kan er een vervolgonderzoek in het ziekenhuis worden ingepland. Er bestaan verschillende manieren om de klachten van fecale incontinentie aan te pakken. Denk daarbij bijvoorbeeld aan bekkenfysiotherapie, darmspoelingen, neuromodulatie of het plaatsen van een stoma.
