Aan de oorzaak van incontinentie kunnen verschillende redenen ten grondslag liggen. Op basis van de achterliggende redenen worden er verschillende typen incontinentie onderscheiden: inspanningsincontinentie, urge-incontinentie, druppelincontinentie en neurogene incontinentie. Daarnaast kan er sprake zijn van een combinatie van oorzaken. Incontinentie kan zorgen voor veel persoonlijk ongemak, maar gelukkig bestaan er verschillende manieren om te voorkomen dat dit probleem u in de weg staat om een kleurrijk en actief leven te leiden. Om een passende oplossing voor uw incontinentie te vinden is het raadzaam om met behulp van een arts de oorzaken van incontinentie vast te stellen. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan het volgen van een dieet, fysiotherapie, het ondergaan van een operatie of het dragen van absorberend incontinentiemateriaal zoals inlegkruisjes of incontinentiebroekjes. Deze vorm van incontinentie wordt doorgaans veroorzaakt door verslapte bekkenbodemspieren of een zwakke blaashals. Hierdoor ontsnapt er urine bij inspanning, aangezien er te weinig weerstand wordt geboden door de spieren. Deze vorm van incontinentie komt relatief vaak voor bij vrouwen, en dan met name na een bevalling of bij het intreden van de overgang. Om inspanningsincontinentie aan te pakken schrijft uw huisarts vaak een doorverwijzing. Met <a href=\"\/nl\/bekkenbodemspieroefeningen\">bekkenbodemoefeningen<\/a> worden uw spieren vervolgens versterkt \u2013hetgeen resulteert in minder urineverlies. Op het moment dat u de aandrang voelt verlaat de urine al meteen de blaas. De achterliggende oorzaken van deze vorm van incontinentie kunnen zowel psychisch als lichamelijk van aard zijn. Zo kan een overmatige fixatie op plassen ervoor zorgen dat u uw plas niet kunt ophouden. Daarnaast zijn er lichamelijke aandoeningen, zoals suikerziekte of een tekort aan vrouwelijke geslachtshormonen die als oorzaak van incontinentie zijn aan te wijzen. Bij deze vorm van incontinentie komt er druppelsgewijs urine vrij. Dit kan soms komen door een blaas die door een verslapte sluitspier niet goed afsluit, maar het hebben van een vergrote prostaat is ook een belangrijke reden. Hierdoor wordt de plasbuis afgekneld waardoor de urine alleen druppelsgewijs vrijkomt. Ook bij <a href=\"\/nl\/nadruppelen-na-het-plassen\">druppelincontinentie<\/a> worden oefeningen aangeraden om de <a href=\"\/nl\/bekkenbodemspieroefeningen\/\">bekkenbodemspieren te versterken<\/a>. Neurogene oorzaken van incontinentie zijn onder andere ruggenmergletsels, hersentumoren, MS, de ziekte van Parkinson en diabetes. Door beschadigingen aan de zenuwen kunnen de signalen van- en naar de blaas niet goed gereguleerd worden. Zo kan het zijn dat de sluitspieren niet goed worden aangestuurd waardoor er een slappe- of juist te krachtige blaas ontstaat.
